An Introduction to Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy
A two-day course presented by Gladeana McMahon.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most misunderstood of all the therapeutic approaches. Good Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy takes into account the whole person and not just the symptoms he or she presents with.
This two-day basic introductory workshop provides both a theoretical and practical introduction to CBT skills. It is aimed at those with little or no understanding or experience of this way of working. The workshop aims to provide those attending with practical skills that can be used safely with clients following completion of the course.
The workshop structure is divided into 50% theory, 40% skill acquisition and practice and 10% video demonstrations. This two-day training event offers delegates the opportunity to develop a range of Cognitive-Behavioural counselling skills. Effective thinking skills and the ability to identify and change self-defeating thoughts are essential skills for any Counsellor. In addition, the course offers delegates the opportunity to consider difficulties encountered in the helping process.
Objectives
At the end the course delegates will have:
a framework for understanding CBT
been introduced to a basic set of CBT skills
had an opportunity to practise a selection of relevant skills
Content
The course includes an examination paper and is a generic course appropriate for staff working in a diversity of settings.
The course will involve basic theory, the therapeutic alliance, assessment and case formation, structuring sessions, using homework, therapeutic assignments and designing behavioural experiments, thinking skills and effective challenging of unhelpful thinking styles.
